About the size of a stack of five U.S. dimes, a thermochron contains within its rugged stainless steel shell a battery, a temperature sensor, a microprocessor, non-volatile memory, and a real-time clock/calendar. Each Thermochron has a unique ID laser-etched into the steel surface (also readable via software).

This tiny logger is easily programmed to take temperature readings at a user-defined interval (1-255 minutes) and store the time/temperature data for later retrieval. It can store over 2,000 measurements - which, if you do the math, translates into taking measurements unattended for nearly a year. Interaction with the Thermochron is facilitated by the 1-Wire communication protocol. Data from several loggers may be combined in your favorite spreadsheet application for easy comparison and creation of tables and graphs to visualize the data.

• Place one inside your computer to generate a temperature profile for a week/month/year.

• Place several in different rooms of your apartment/home to identify hot/cold areas.

• Place one in your refrigerator and/or freezer to monitor efficiency.

• Attach one to your pet's collar to see what kind of environmental temperatures they are exposed to througout the day.

NASA's Thermochron Tutorial (Flash presentation) and Thermochron Guide (PDF file) provide a great introduction to the technology, but be sure to ignore the "only works with Windows computers" bit - software to interact with the Thermochron is freely available for download for both Mac OS X (10.2 to 10.6) and Windows (98, ME, 2000, XP, Vista, or 7).

In order to program and retrieve data from Thermochrons you need a probe and USB adapter - the Thermochron Starter Kit listed above contains all of the necessary hardware to get you started. One probe/USB adapter may be used to interact with any number of Thermochrons.
